Löwenbräu saves 90 percent on electricity with OSRAM LEDs

OSRAM and Löwenbräu cut CO2 emissions equal to 3.5 million liters of beer at the Oktoberfest

Theresienwiese in Munich will be transformed once again into the world’s largest fair from September 17 to October 3, 2011, attracting millions of visitors. Surprisingly, the festival tents manage to combine a party atmosphere with sustainability, as demonstrated by Löwenbräu in cooperation with OSRAM: Instead of energy-burning incandescent lamps, 8,000 LED lamps from the Munich-based manufacturer will make sure beer mugs and dirndls shine in their finest colors in the traditional Löwenbräu tent, while going easy on the environment.

A total of 8,000 new LED lamps from OSRAM will be installed in the festival tent of Munich’s long-standing Löwenbräu brewery. During the two weeks of Oktoberfest, they will cut power costs by 90 percent and CO2 emissions by 7,000 kg compared to the incandescent lamps used previously. This is equal to the amount of CO2 emitted by a mid-sized car over 45,000 kilometers and has the same volume as 3.5 million liters of Oktoberfest beer.

“We are pleased to have found in OSRAM a partner who can support us in managing our festival tent sustainably, and work with us to make Oktoberfest more energy-efficient," says Wiggerl Hagn, manager of the Löwenbräu tent. Klaus-Günter Vennemann, head of General Lighting at OSRAM, also is excited about the joint project: “We’re very happy that we can make the event greener with our lamps. What’s more, we hope this change serves as a model among festival managers for other energy-saving concepts.”

After the Hacker Festival tent, which was the first to switch to energy-saving lamps at the 2007 Oktoberfest, and the Solar Scooter ride operated by the Distel family, which lit up for the first time that same year in colored light from OSRAM’s efficient LED modules, Löwenbräu is following suit with energy-efficient, eco-friendly lighting. Instead of the 15 watt incandescent lamps used before, OSRAM Parathom lamps will now douse the festival tent in warm white light.
